Chapter Eleven

The next morning Lauren woke up feeling lighthearted. The moments she had shared last night with Garrett over tea had warmed her heart in a real way. He had not only accepted her prayer but actually seemed to truly appreciate it. Lauren knew God was working in Garrett’s and Macy’s hearts, and Lauren’s feelings for this family were definitely growing.

Sitting up in bed, she raised her arms in a full stretch, letting out a hearty yawn. Nocchi stirred in the bed on the floor beside Lauren and finally lifted her head. Lauren scooted off the mattress and scrunched down beside her dog.

“Good morning, girl,” she said. Nocchi let out a yawn. Her tail wagged with as little energy as Lauren felt before her morning caffeine consumption. Lauren laughed. “Guess we both need our coffee this morning.” She glanced at the clock. “Oh, dear, I’d better hurry or they’ll go hiking without me.”

Without another moment’s hesitation Lauren scurried around the room, gathering her hiking clothes and the necessary items Garrett had mentioned the night before. If Candace and Gwen could see her today, they would never believe it. Lauren Romey actually going hiking in full mountain gear? Her chin rose a notch. Well, it was not as though she wasn’t the adventurous type. So what if she happened to prefer working up a sweat in a sauna as opposed to hiking in the woods—was that so wrong? Laying out her clothes carefully on the bed, Lauren grabbed her essentials and headed for the bathroom.

Maybe she was a bit, well, citified. But at least she didn’t whine about the idea the way Gracie did. Now, that wasn’t to say Candace and Gwen wouldn’t pay for putting her through this. She smiled in spite of herself. Oddly enough, she was actually looking forward to this little trek. After all, it’s not like she was in bad shape. She made regular trips to the gym. But hiking on a mountain, with bears? That is so not her thing.

Lauren turned on the water in the shower. “Oh, well, this could be the beginning of a new adventure for me.” As she stepped into the warmth of the steamy water, her voice lifted a song of praise in melody. She sang heartily, each note soaring with her spirit. She felt confident that neither the hiking trip nor the hot sun—in fact, not even Gracie Jane Skinner—could steal her joy today. The Lord had created this day and she was bound and determined to enjoy it. Come what may.

Once her shower was over, she quickly dressed and prepared to take Nocchi out. Lauren grabbed a casual T-shirt and shrugged it over Nocchi’s head. Nocchi was ready to go. With a slight hesitation, Lauren dared a glance into the full-length mirror.

G.I. Joe with hair stared back at her.

She sighed, grabbed Nocchi’s leash and stepped over to the door. Noticing a folded piece of paper on the floor, she bent and picked it up, noting her name on the front.
